The Art of mixing materials & finishes

Over the years, I’ve encountered all kinds of reactions when it comes to mixing finishes—some people love the layered, collected feel, while others find it overwhelming. My role as a designer is to help open minds to the beauty of mixing finishes and materials.

I remember when kitchens with mixed metals or varying wood tones were rare. I used to be a self-proclaimed metal purist—you’d never catch me pairing satin brass with brushed nickel (or any combo, really). But as my design perspective and confidence evolved, so did my approach. Now, I fully embrace the art of mixology in interiors.

Each of these spaces is a love letter to that evolution—a celebration of warmth, texture, and personality through unexpected pairings. I hope they inspire you to explore your own mix.

Warm, inviting and organic, this kitchen has a variety of finishes, including two-tone cabinetry, Calacatta marble and a tile backplash, along with black windows and counter stools.
