Zen Retreat - Primary Bathroom Sanctuary

Vessel Sink from Stone Forest

Custom KOA floating vanity with Basalt Stone Flooring & IPE Bench Seat

This is one of our all time favorite bathroom design and remodel projects. We converted an existing laundry room to create this Zen primary bathroom retreat. This room engulfs you in natural materials and literally grounds you to the earth. I really can’t explain how amazing this room is and the pictures don’t do it justice. But it truly speaks to how natural materials and textures produce a calming, grounding experience that nurtures us. Here is a quick run down of the materials:

The curbless shower and floor is a combination of basalt slabs and river rocks. The entire bathroom is waterproofed with two linear drains on each side. We also added electrical heat mats under each slab for that added warmth.

The client had salvaged Koa wood from his travels over 20 years ago and save it. We made this amazing floating vanity out it.

We created a niche with recessed LED lighting that extends from the vanity to the shower, creating a feeling of flow and connection.

The IPE shower bench is designed for respite, relaxation and of course, Aging in Place. It floats off of the wall with custom fabricated metal brackets.

We tiled the entire bathroom in natural limestone. We originally picked out a different limestone from Walker Zanger. When we went to purchase it, they informed us the quarry started to run “dry” and the tiles were unpredictable. We picked an alternate that ended up being even better. I love when that happens!

A Stone Forest granite vessel sink makes the finishing touches, along with the Grohe plumbing fixtures from Bay Plumbing Supply.

Koa Vanity, Stone Forest Vessel Sink, Limestone Tile, and a Custom Lighted Niche

This Koa Wood vanity was hand crafted from salvaged Koa wood. It sits flush with recessed niche that extends into the shower area. Recessed LED lighting provides the perfect amount of warm glow.

The floor covered in basalt slabs from Pietra Fina and river rock. The entire floor is waterproofed under the stone and sloped to two linear drains. The IPE bench floats on the wall to provide rest, relaxation and allow Aging in Place. The walls are tiles in large format Limestone tiles.
